Ride Safe & Sober This Holiday Season

by Dan Lesniak

The holidays are in full swing all along the Orange Line with plenty of fun and exciting events, parties, and shows going on through the rest of the year. We want everyone to have a wonderful and safe holiday too. With this in mind we are happy to share some information about a great local program, Holiday SoberRide. This is a great community program with Arlington County and other counties in Virginia and Maryland, working with the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP), to help ensure people arrive home safely after a night of revelry.

As of December 11th, on through New Year’s Day 2016, there will be free cab rides available, up to $30 worth of fare costs, from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. This is literally a life saver of a program. Last year almost 1,200 residents in the greater Washington DC area called for a Holiday SoberRide. Those that should not have been driving were kept off our roads, and everyone was safer for it. According WRAP, on New Year’s Eve alone, a would be drunk driver was kept off the road every 68 seconds.

Everyone should be able to celebrate and have a great time during the holidays, so long as we do so responsibly. The Holiday SoberRide is one way our community comes together to help everyone do the right thing. There are two ways to call for a free ride should you need one. Either toll free at 1-800-200-TAXI FREE, or you can dial #WRAP if you have AT&T as your cell phone service provider.

There are some things to keep in mind about the Holiday SoberRide program. All callers must be 21 or over, the legal age to drink alcohol. If your cab fare is above $30, the caller is responsible for the remaining balance. The program is in effect in specific areas. In Virginia: Arlington, Eastern Loudoun, Fairfax, and Prince William Counties, as well as the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. In Maryland: Montgomery and Prince George Counties and the Cities of Bowie, College Park, Gaithersburg, Greenbelt, Rockville, and Takoma Park. The District of Columbia is also included. No reservations can be made in advance for a ride.
