Arlington Creates Military and Veteran Committee

by Dan Lesniak

Arlington County has long supported our service men and women in a variety of ways. While we have our fair share of military memorials, there is more to supporting our active and veteran soldiers than monuments. There are services needed and outreach to be accomplished to recognize and support the efforts of our nations’ heroes. Life along the Orange Line is about to get even better for those who are or have been a part of our military branches, and their families. Last week the county announced the creation of the Arlington County Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. This is the first committee of its kind in the region and will be dedicated toward creating programs to support our active duty population, veterans and their families.

The new committee will be comprised of representatives from Arlington County, local military posts, the USS Arlington, area businesses, and a variety of services organizations. Residents are encouraged to get involved as well, especially in future activities planned by the committee. The main goal of the committee is to find new and creative ways to support our service men and women and their families beyond the basic support they get from the military.

Some of the specific initiatives that will be assigned to the committee will include strengthening the relationship between military and veteran personnel and the county government, business and residential communities. There will be active coordination of Arlington County and community resources to support our military population. New programs and events will be developed toward opportunities to show our support in honoring our military members and their families. The committee will also become the official county liaison working with the USS Arlington Community Alliance and the Vietnam War Commemoration which has events planned through 2017.

Supporting our military service men and women and their families is one way Arlington County shines when it comes to community caring and resources. The new committee being created reflects the depth of respect and honor our local government holds toward our national heroes. I encourage businesses and residents to watch for upcoming programs and events from the Arlington County Military and Veterans Affairs Committee so you can join in as well.
