Veterans Day is this Wednesday, November 11th, and we at Orange Line Living appreciate the service our vets have given to our country and are proud to give them a nod of honor which they so well deserve. The origin of Veterans Day goes back to the end of World War I, when the war to end all wars ended on November 11th, 1918. Since then, there have unfortunately been more wars and conflicts where our service men and women have willingly gone to serve and protect in the name of the United States. Without our military and the patriotic sacrifices made by our soldiers, our nation would be a very different place, I am sure. We now take November 11th as a day to honor all veterans no matter where or when they served. This is the day for our Vets, and we want to show them our support.
Living in Arlington County, we have some of the best opportunities and most fitting venues where we can give honor and show our respect. This year, The Orange Line team is hosting a special event for area vets. We invite you to join us at the Orange Line Living Military Happy Hour on Thursday, November 12th, at the Continental Pool Lounge. From 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, there will appetizers served, and all vets will get two drinks on us! Bring a friend or family member too, please note, the lounge is for ages 21 and older. We hope to see you at Military Happy Hour for an evening of relaxing fun.
Because we live in such a special part of the country, on Veterans Day, there are several monuments with ceremonies you can attend on the 11th. At the Arlington National Cemetery, there will be a ceremony at 11:00 am with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Afterward, all are welcome to attend the parade of colors inside the Memorial Amphitheater. The parade is presented by a variety of veteran’s organizations coming together for the day. This is the 62nd National Veterans Day Observance, and is free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early to ensure you have a spot for viewing the ceremony. The events at the National Cemetery continue in the afternoon with a ceremony at the Women in Military Service For America Memorial, located at the Gateway to the cemetery. At 3:00 pm, there will be formal military honors given, speakers sharing their personal stories from their time in service, and reflections on what Veterans Day means, as well as a wreath laying.
There will also be wreath laying ceremonies and the honoring of our vets at many of the memorials in Arlington and Washington D.C., including the Air Force Memorial, Navy Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Women’s Memorial, and World War II Memorial. At the Mount Vernon Estate, you can enjoy the sounds of the all veteran barbershop chorus in a special patriotic community concert being presented at 11:00 am. All Active military personnel and veterans will have free admission.
Whatever you chose to do in honor of our veterans, we hope you have a safe and positive day. We are proud of our vets, and look forward to giving a little back to you at our happy hour.
