This coming Saturday, September 26th, anyone who lives along the Orange Line, or is visiting Arlington, will get to experience firsthand one of the events that sets us apart as an incredible urban village. The 18th Annual Clarendon Day Street Festival will take over the neighborhood, bringing people together for fun, food, art and entertainment. The entire day is filled with activities for the whole family. Last year saw over 30,000 people in attendance at the street fair. This is one of the most-loved events of the year, bringing neighbors, businesses and artists together to celebrate life in Clarendon. Come down to Clarendon and Wilson Boulevards and spend the day enjoying the best this neighborhood has to offer.
The day dawns early with the Pacer’s 10k/5k/Kids Dash. You can register to join the run or cheer on the participants as they run along Clarendon beginning at 8:00 am. The street festival itself opens at 11:00 am and runs until 6:00 pm. You will find not only excellent food from area restaurants, cafes and pubs, you can get a taste of award-winning chili recipes at the International Chili Cook-off Tournament. The competitors will have samples available and be cooking up their secret recipes for judging. The winners of this competition will qualify for the World Championship Chili Cook-off in October. If you love chili, you will want to check this tournament out. There will also be a variety of beer and wine available as you stroll along the Clarendon Street Fair throughout the day.
This year there will be five music stages located throughout the neighborhood, with seating included. With two stages on Highland Blvd. and two on Clarendon Blvd. as well as one in Central Park, you could spend all day just enjoying the free performances. The sounds of Jazz, Blues, Soul, Irish, Folk music and more will be filling the air. The line-up is varied and performances start as early as 10:30 am, with the last shows beginning at 4:00 pm. The main Clarendon Day Street Festival website has the complete list of performers, times and locations. The kids will also have their own entertainment with the Kids Zone, full of activities geared just for them, from face painting to stories and music, and even some rides.
Two other big draws for the street festival are the Arts and Crafts Promenade and the exhibitor booths which run all along the festival streets. You can find a great new piece of art and meet the artist who made it, or connect with local companies to learn more about them. Non-Profits will also be on hand to share information about what they do to help our community and how you can participate as well. This is a huge day for the Clarendon neighborhood, and we look forward to it every year. If you have not been before, plan on it this year.
