If there is one long standing tradition our region has been known for beyond government and politics, it is Beer. D.C. Beer Week is coming up soon and is a collaborative event put on seven years running now to help educate about the process and our culture around brewed concoctions and celebrate this great American pastime. For the fourth year now, life along the Orange Line has gotten in on the celebration here in Arlington as well, with our own Crab Fest being put on by local brewery DC Brau and Quarterdeck restaurant. D.C. Beer week runs from August 9th through 16th with plenty of ways to celebrate your favorite local brew.
Crab Fest is slated as the big event for D.C. Beer week with all you can eat Mid-Atlantic Crab, draft beers and pitchers of DC Brau. The focus of the fest is indigenous ingredients, from the seafood to the drink, all items are local and fresh. DC Brau has brought local brewing back to D.C. and the area with its fine use of European and American techniques blending together to create incredible brews locally. For over 30 years, the people of Arlington and D.C. have enjoyed Quarterdeck Restaurant for its incredible seafood, including Maryland Blue Crab, which is in season right now. It was a natural pairing for DC Beer Week to have DC Brau and Quarterdeck come together to celebrate seafood and brew for this action packed week-long festival.
There are other D.C. Beer Week events happening all around the area, from beer tastings to a beach party and tap takeovers all over town, where local brews take over area pubs and taverns to spread the experience of drinking local beer everywhere. There are also workshops and seminars being offered so you can try your own hand at brewing and learn more than you ever thought possible about beer. Some examples include “We Can Brew it” on August 10th featuring top female brewers in the area, “How Government Affects Your Beer” on August 11th, sure to be a lively discussion panel, and “Earn your Beer PHD” on August 12th, a night of games, quizzes and beer, learn a little and share your own expertise.
Whatever you decide to do for D.C. Beer Week, there is sure to be fun all around. This is a great way to learn more about local brews and maybe even discover your new favorite beer.
