Coming this September 12th, Orange Line Living will be full of Jazz, funk and fun at the 25th annual Rosslyn Jazz Fest. This popular Rosslyn event is presented by the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID), and has been a haven for Jazz enthusiasts around the region. The festival brings in top performers both locally and nationally recognized, which span the breadth of Jazz music. In years past, the festival has played host to performers who have seen their careers launch skyward, such as Debo Band and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. This year’s line-up will be an incredible blend of Jazz styles, from classic soul to international funk, so mark your calendar for you won’t want to miss it.
The Rosslyn Jazz Fest is a one-day, free event held at Gateway Park near the Key Bridge. Gateway Park is the perfect venue for the Jazz Fest with its amphitheater and spectacular skyline views. The first performance will begin at 1:00 pm, and the last will finish at 7:00 pm, giving you a full day of amazing Jazz tunes to enjoy at the park. There will be food and fashion trucks on hand as well as a beer and wine garden, being expanded this year for your tasting enjoyment.
The line-up is noted below:
- The Funk Ark (Funk/Afrobeat): 1:00 pm
- Sonny Knight & The Lakers (Funk): 2:20 pm
- Debo Band (Ethiopian Pop): 3:50 pm
- The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (Classic Soul): 5:20 pm
The Funk Ark is an ensemble of the best jazz musicians from the D.C. area. Formed by Will Rast, they draw from a love of Latin Funk and dance music of the 1960s and 70s. Sonny Knight & The Lakers hail from Minneapolis and feature Sonny Knight, a jazz musician whose career spans fifty years. Debo Band is an 11-member group formed by Ethiopian/American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen. The band incorporates traditional Ethiopian music and vocal sounds with American soul and funk rhythms; there’s even an accordion adding an Eastern European flair to their sound. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band has been playing a mixture of New Orleans-centric music for the last 35 years. They compare themselves to gumbo, a little of this and a little of that, blending R&B, Jazz, Funk and Caribbean rhythms into their own incredible sound.
