Neighborhood Day in Arlington County is coming up this weekend on Saturday, May 9th, and Orange Line Living is not one to miss out. This year, residents and visitors can join Neighborhood Day in Clarendon with a special celebration focusing on the history and heritage of when the area was known as “Little Saigon.” During the 1970s-1980s, there was a great influx of Vietnamese immigrants to the neighborhood, and county officials see this year’s Neighborhood Day as a great chance to remember and celebrate all that this culture has brought us.
The event itself, called Echoes of Little Saigon, will be from 1:00-3:00 pm and will include Vietnamese art displays as well as art activities for the family to participate in. You can get a taste of Little Saigon at the Lemongrass Food Truck which will also be on hand. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. on May 9th, historians along with some former Little Saigon residents will provide a narrated walking tour of the Clarendon neighborhood, showing off historical buildings and those still operating businesses from the era. Echoes of Little Saigon will be hosted at Clarendon Central Park located on Wilson Blvd.
Clarendon is not the only Arlington neighborhood to celebrate this great community event. If you want to venture beyond the Orange Line to other areas of the county, there are other events happening throughout Neighborhood Day. Barcroft is celebrating with the Barcroft Elementary School Spring Fair and the Bluemont neighborhood is holding their annual Walk for the Animals in support of the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. To get close with nature for the day, you can join the Long Branch Nature Center in the Glencarlyn neighborhood for an evening campfire night learning about snakes while munching on s’mores. There is also a Welcome Back Hummingbirds celebration at the Gulf Branch Nature Center within the Old Glebe neighborhood, where you and the kids can make your own feeder. You can work on wellness at either the Penrose Park Family Fitness Day or Yorktown’s new re-opening of the playground at Chestnut Hills Park. The Westover Branch Library will have their own celebration for Neighborhood day with family fun including face painting for the young ones.
Whatever you choose to do for Neighborhood Day, you will get to experience firsthand what makes Arlington such a great place to live.
