To help increase driver awareness and road safety, seven new red light cameras have been installed in Arlington as of the end of February. Most of the cameras are within the urban sector of Arlington County, and near or within the Orange Line Living corridor. A total of seven cameras have been installed at five intersections, which will go live 30 days after installation was completed. During the 30 day “grace period”, any drivers caught running a red light will be given a warning that soon fines will be issued based on the cameras catching vehicles running red lights.
Fines will be $50.00, similar to a parking citation. They will not affect anyone’s driving record. The goal of the cameras is to provide help to the Arlington County Police when it comes to catching traffic violators and to help make higher risk intersections safer. The intersections which were chosen for the red light cameras met several key attributes pointing toward the need for extra surveillance. Those intersections with high rates of accidents and red light violations, along with the risk to police in apprehending violators safely near an intersection, and the need for increased pedestrian safety were all considered.
The seven new red light cameras can be found at the following intersections:
- On Columbia Pike at S. Glebe Rd. – East and Westbound directions
- On Columbia Pike at S. George Mason Dr. – Eastbound only
- On N. Glebe Rd. at Washington Blvd- Northbound only
- On Lee Highway at N. George Mason Dr.- Westbound only
- On 23rd N. at US Route 1- North and Southbound directions
It is always best to drive safely and obey all traffic laws. Now that the new red light cameras have been installed, the safety of everyone, pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and the police will hopefully improve with the surveillance added.
