Unique Ways to Celebrate the Holidays

by Dan Lesniak

happy holidaysWe are at the peak of the Winter Holiday Season, and no matter how you celebrate; the hectic pace of the season can become overwhelming. It is always a plus if you can take some time and do something special with family or friends to mark this joyful season of the year. I have listed below some of the most unique ways you can have fun and celebrate the holidays.

Everyone loves the zoo, but have you ever been to the zoo at night? At this time of year, through January 4th, you can visit the National Zoo in Washington DC, and get an extra treat with the amazing and colorful Zoolights display. This annual tradition includes more than 500,000 LED lights transforming the Zoo into a magical winter wonderland. There is now a light show set to music, and plenty of activities for the entire family. You may also experience a rare glimpse of the more nocturnal animals at the zoo while you walk about all the open exhibits, and enjoy the lights.

Perhaps one of the most unique holiday displays in the region can be found at the Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor, MD. Here you can find a truly icy winter landscape within the resort. Visitors can explore 5,000 blocks of ice sculptures created by world renowned artists from Harbin, China, where a city of ice is sculpted every year. The ICE! Exhibit features Frosty the Snowman with scenes from the story throughout. Be sure to bring gloves, hats, and scarves through because the exhibit is kept at a constant 9 degrees to keep the sculptures frozen for all to enjoy.

One of the best, family friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations to be found is the First Night Celebration in Alexandria’s Old Town. From Noon throughout the night, and into the early morning hours, there will be a variety of performances taking place throughout Alexandria businesses. From comedians to live music, fun kid’s activities including a Fun Hunt, and a Battle of the Bands, you can bring the family out for a great time. The night ends with a spectacular view of fireworks at midnight.

Whatever you choose to celebrate, and however you choose to do it, I hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season and a great New Year. May 2015 be successful and exciting for you!
