Arlington to Remember 9/11

by Dan Lesniak

911memorialIt’s been thirteen years since the terrible attacks of 9/11 against our nation. We as a country will never forget the loves lost that day, or the heroics performed by so many of our people. Those living along the Orange Line will have several opportunities to remember and honor those directly affected by the day that will live on in our memories. There will be two 5K races held to mark the event and to raise money for charities.

The first race will be held on Saturday, September 6th and is being put on by the Arlington Police, Fire and Sheriff Memorial. It will be an evening race beginning at 6:00 pm. The race costs $40.00 to enter with the proceeds going to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Segs4Vets, Team Rubicon and T.A.P.S (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors). If you want to join this wonderful way to commemorate our 9/11 heroes, register soon as the race is limited to the first 4,500 registrants. Another way to help out with this 5K is to donate, or if you want to run but can’t make it to the location, you can be a virtual runner by pledging to run 5Ks on the 6th. You can find more information and register at their website Arlington911race.

On the following Saturday, September 13th, there will be another race, the 9/11 911heroesHeroes Run. This is a morning race starting at 8:30 am on 23rd Street South, between Eads and Fern streets. The cost to participate is $35.00 (plus a small registration service fee) and benefits the Travis Manion Foundation, a charity that supports veterans and their families as well as the families of fallen service members. The 9/11 Heroes Run in Arlington is one of 47 races that will be put on nationwide to commemorate 9/11. Other locations for the race include Richmond, VA, Philadelphia, PA and New York City.

Arlington and the rest of our country will never forget the tragedy of 9/11, but more importantly, we will remember the strength and perseverance of our people pulling together as one community in a time of great need.
